Hamburger & Smile
Last summer my family and I went to the Riverwalk in Downtown San Antonio. The whole place was beautiful but the most memorable thing I witnessed was actually a man. For some reason his image is still stuck in my head. There were hundreds of people walking around the Riverwalk, Alamo and tourist spots, but seeing this homeless man nearly float through the crowd like he was almost invisible will never leave my mind. Looking back I wish I had stopped to get him a hamburger and a smile. His lost face pops in my mind often and I wonder if he's ok or cold or hungry. Don't get me wrong, I've seen homeless before. Usually run away teens or drug addicts. But something about him made me think that he was probably a veteran of our armed services. Someone who deserves a lot more respect than wandering the streets. We will be going back to San Antonio this summer and I will be sure to look for him so I can give him that hamburger and smile that he deserves.
